Andrea Johnson

 

Simply stated, batik is a process of applying wax to fabric to resist dye.  While taking a group batik class, I discovered that layering fluid wax over vibrant colors often results in unexpected and complex images.  Each layer of wax and dye is an intuitive effort towards a hopeful outcome as the piece becomes increasingly obscured and ultimately enshrouded in wax.  Removing the wax from the fabric with an iron reveals the final reward of vibrant colors, random outlining and crackling which create “happy accidents” that can never be duplicated.  

 

Andrea Johnson is a native of southeastern Minnesota and a graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College.  Her art is influenced by the natural environments she encountered in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Arizona.
